How the calorie calculation works
Resting energy requirement (RER) = 70 × body weight in kilograms0.75. For the healthy-adult estimate, maintenance energy requirement (MER) = RER × the factor below. One pound equals 0.45359237 kg. “Calories” on this page means kilocalories (kcal).

Worked examples that match the calculator
These examples assume healthy adults with body-condition scores of 4–5/9, no veterinarian-provided override and no treat deduction. All intermediate values retain full precision; only displayed calories are rounded.

A 10 lb neutered adult cat therefore displays approximately 261 kcal/day under these assumptions. Indoor housing alone does not select a universal calorie allowance. The earlier 200 kcal example did not match the calculator’s assumptions.
How to calculate cups, cans or grams of food
Use the calorie content printed on the actual food package. Select its matching unit: kcal/kg, kcal/g, kcal/cup or kcal/can. Do not enter a percentage, an ingredient weight or the size of the bag into the calorie-content field.
- Main-food calories per day = total calorie target − treat and extra-food calories.
- Grams per day = main-food calories ÷ kcal/kg × 1,000, or main-food calories ÷ kcal/g.
- Cups or cans per day = main-food calories ÷ kcal per cup or can.
- Portion per meal = daily portion ÷ the number of meals.
Arithmetic example: a supplied target of 600 kcal/day, with 40 kcal/day in treats, leaves 560 kcal for the main food. At 400 kcal/cup, that equals 1.4 cups/day, or 0.7 cups at each of two meals. At 4,000 kcal/kg instead, it equals 140 g/day. These are sample inputs, not a prescription for a particular pet.
For a cup/can entry, grams can be shown only when you also supply the matching serving weight. For mixed diets, this version assumes the entire main-food calorie allowance comes from the one food entered; it does not allocate calories among multiple foods.
What the additional inputs mean
- Body-condition score: the automatic estimate is limited to healthy adults scored 4–5 on the 9-point scale. An unknown or different score requires an individualized calorie target.
- Ideal weight: enter a value assessed by your veterinarian. It is shown for context, without automatically calculating a calorie deficit.
- Current intake: include all calorie sources. The result compares that intake with the target but does not tell you to increase or decrease feeding.
- Veterinarian-provided target: this replaces the automatic estimate. Enter the total daily target, including treats and extras.
Use the WSAVA nutrition tools with your veterinary team to assess body and muscle condition. Growing, pregnant, nursing, ill, underweight or overweight pets need an individualized plan. This calculator’s supported weights—0.5–120 kg for dogs and 0.5–20 kg for cats—are software limits, not definitions of healthy weight.
Why the calculator no longer prescribes macro percentages
The earlier fixed protein, fat and carbohydrate outputs did not establish a suitable nutrient profile for an individual pet. A food-label percentage, a dry-matter percentage and a percentage of calories use different denominators. They must not be presented as interchangeable targets.
For example, 10% protein in a food containing 75% moisture converts to 40% protein on a dry-matter basis: 10 ÷ (100 − 75) × 100. It does not mean that 40% of the food’s calories come from protein. Using the result with your feeding plan
Check the food’s nutritional adequacy statement for the appropriate species and life stage. AAHA recommends keeping the main complete-and-balanced diet at least 90% of total calories and treats/extras at most 10%. A pet already maintaining an appropriate weight may not need a feeding change simply because its intake differs from a formula. Compare intake, weight and condition with your veterinary team. Can I use this for weight loss?
Use a daily calorie target supplied by your veterinarian. Entering an ideal weight does not generate a weight-loss prescription.
Why do two foods give different portions?
Foods can contain different calories per gram, cup or can. Check the energy density and serving unit each time you change foods.
What happens when I change an input?
The old result clears. Recalculate after every change so the result corresponds to the current entries.
